Special weekend in Chinatown

This week it will be a short entry for a meaning full last 4 days.  Honouring the people who have come before us and the community we are.  The Big Print Project -- Chinatown  took place at the plaza in front of the Sun Yat Sen gardens and it was one of the most interesting experiences I've had the pleasure to share in my own city in a long time.  Heading into this area every morning to set up for the days art project was eye opening.  The artists involved in this project are Canadian Chinese and First Nations and some of the most generous people I've had the pleasure to meet, interview and work with over a humble 4 days.  The stories shared and told through visual images of print making with a steamroller left me speechless with gratitude.  I was not alone to see this special viewing unfold.............enjoy 1) everyone watching and 2) a sample of the work shared. Thanks to all who came and especially: Richard Tetrault, Esther Rausenberg, Gerald and Debra Pedros, Jerry Whitehead, Connie Sabo, Greg Sabo, Kee Toy Woo Joseph, Corey Bulpitt, Haisla Collins, Jeanette Lee, Sharifah Marsden, Sylvia Wong, June Yune, Cody Lecoy, Brendan Rausenberg, D'Arcy Humblman and my family who came out to appreciate this amazing work.

Walkin' in the Hood.

It was a great week looking through more house history, as you'll see in the Big House section, as well as welcoming back family friends who used to live in Strathcona.  The fun began when one of the older residence, now 87, came to share her stories of her time here.  Then other family friends joined in and we took photos of them infront of the houses they once lived in.  While writing more on the house history I couldn't help thinking about the lives of people who lived in the Big House ranging from tragedies to celebrations.

10 MORE.......

Spending more time in the house this week has led me to take some interesting images that reflect the "humanity" of this great house.!!!  Hope you enjoy these and we'll look deeper into the history of the people living there next week..........(all 10 images are in the BIG HOUSE section of the site)

Thinking about those first 35 years ......

This week I've spent time at the Big House; working on the dust be gone project!!  This immersion in the space has me reflecting  on the  lives and the people and families that have come through the doors of this house.  The photos uploaded to the Images and Big House sections of the site are some details I noticed during the pauses of  dust removal, mopping, scrubbing etc....
