“It’s going to be a spooky scene if the Pink house isn’t ready for trick or treaters” says the Octopus Lady or was it the Pink Chick from the Big House? Regardless either is a spooky person (smile). This year is going to be a quick happening for Halloween as “the Team” is working hard to make things happen. I keep saying the mantra for a successful project is, “pick the right people”; “it’s all about the team” (repeat 100 x’s).
This weekend some of those team players came through in a cross over of Octopus and Pink House. This Crystal Octopus Art Light, from beginning to end has involved at least 8 people to get it right. The artist Robert from Sasamat Creative is the producer of this fabulous crystal light — please do check him out during the ECCS Eastside Culture Crawl this year at the Mergatroid building; that’s where I discovered him. Robert, specifically for this project, made a new mold to create the 3 larger shaped crystal lights used in this installation. The number or crystals is a nod to the Octopus, as we call the contemporary structure in the back. The 3 larger crystals represent the 3 hearts of the Octopus and the 8 smaller crystals represent the arms/legs of the Octopus; bringing the Octopus into the Pink House.
The story of the Crystal Octopus Art Light installation started many years ago when I was touring the Mergatroid building during the CRAWL (always the 3rd weekend in November). My friend Esther was looking at the Cloud lights which she bought, while my eye fell on the Crystal ones. Hmmmm, I thought, my artistic signature has always been the triangle and circle and my fondness for gemstones because of their inclusions are singing to me in this light form. I went a way to let it all settle in and it did — these lights just kept speaking to me.
During the evolution of architectural drawings Marianne and I discussed the idea of how these might work in the Pink House. She gave me some amazing drawing options to review and I went with Option 2, ( see above) . While on site Dino and I kept looking at the ceiling deciding what to do on the electrical front to get the house ready for the eventual install. This led to a discussion about #’s of lights and evolved into bringing the Octopus into the Pink House.
Marianne had already made rosette references from the Pink House to the contemporary Octopus doors as well as the front door to the Pink House and now the nod was coming back to the inside space. This project has been noding back and forth in thoughtful reference evolving into a process of layered beauty and meaning. This is not easy as it takes time and balance and with fingers crossed you achieve a special positive result. In this case, the Crystal Octopus Art Light grew to have 3 hearts and 8 arms/legs. As you can see it turned out pretty good, don’t you think?
Next week we’ll continue to look at the work of cool things such as 5Left, who also popped by this weekend. Oh and Peter Pierobon and Reece and…
