Last week there was a mention of giving up some “dirt”, well there’s something even better than that going on…
I’d like to say ‘"THE ART IS ON THE WALLS”!!! , but I can’t, not yet anyway. Another promise of art and dirt to come fingers crossed we’ll have some progress in that department in the very near future. However, here is the even better part I mentioned an amazing art opening recently attended that entertains in dirt and absurdity through surreal talent of an exceptional nature.
This past weekend a group of us went up the Sunshine Coast to spend time with friends and go SEE Maurice Spira’s retrospective curated by Canada Council at the Sechelt Gallery. Many years ago my dear friends Richard Tetrault and Esther Rausenberg introduced me to Maurice and his work and I had the good fortune to visit his studio/home in Roberts Creek on a few occasions. His place is an amazing visual delight at every turn with lots of tongue in cheek clever references to the absurdity of life with a twist of the dark side — just how I like it!
The retrospective attended by 9 of us, sporting eyeball tattoos on our foreheads and stylish knit caps, made for a fun homage to surrealism and Maurice at his exhibition . The curation was well done balancing Maurice’s portrait work, still lives and wonderful surreal anarchist pieces. The delightfully absurd and provocative work shined through the exquisitely talented technical execution of the artist’s hand. It’s worth taking a trip up the coast just to see this show. Here’s a sneak peak for you and don’t forget to get your eyeball tattoo for your forehead; a requirement for fun close looking!
The “eyes” have it for this exhibition:
Keep looking for the EYES!! …
