PEOPLE...How many people does it take to hang your art?

The safe answer to that question is “Always more than one! “. Sometimes it takes 2 people to get it right; one to hold it and one to say “to the left? hmmm, maybe a little higher..” While sometimes it takes 3 just to get it into the house.

Three and four are hiding from the pics. so it looks like it took 2 to get the art doors in the house — those 2 supervising positions were critical. Note: we’re not even talking about the people that were involved in doing the millwork around the big print doors that took those print blocks to a completely different level!! The count just goes on.

Today I watched Vlad work away at adding the hardware to the doors so the could be hung and align with the floor and ceiling tracks. I told you that supervising role is critical — hehehe. The process is quite something when you think about curating the collection and all the tweaking required to try to get it right. or at least to your liking. For me it’s a pleasure to watch how work starts talking to each other. For instance you put one piece of art next to another and it is obvious it doesn’t fit but then you place it on anther wall and suddenly the ladies are talking to Madonna. To fully understand that last sentence you must come visit me and I’ll show you what I mean.

Aside from watching Vlad, I also walked the house with Reece regarding last touches and the best systems to hang the art on the tall wall. For instance, do we go the way of the fry reglet or just nail directly to the wall with art hanging coat hook rustic hook hardware? Further discussion came into play with prints and positions to avoid direct light so as not to let the works fade from sunlight. We also covered off the work that will go in the kitchen on the tile wall. Should we look to a putty type seal on the tile with tacs or go for making a small hole in the grout for a secure and permanent placement?

There’s a lot to consider when placing art and that’s why I also made a few calls and e-mails to the hanging professionals. At least one piece will need a 16 foot ladder to be in place for it to look right. I’m now waiting for quotes and timelines to see who best will suit my hanging needs as ideally I’d like all the work up and hanging before March 19th. The VGH Art Committee, which I’m on, are coming to my place for a meeting and it would be so fitting if the art here was in place. Wish me luck on that front.

Here’s a few shots of todays progress: welcome to the PowWow — just wait ‘til next weeks post!!

COMMUNITY...coming together here and away

Writing every Monday has been a bit of a challenge heading into 2020 — is it construction fatique or it all hitting me as things come to the final touches? Whatever it is I’ll continue to do my best to post on Monday as we roll on through the year. Fortunately, a dear friend now living in Toronto, started poking the bear in Dec/Jan to make me roll up my points and book a trip to Barbados. All was booked in January and thanks to that guardian angel friend everything was made easy and then one day in Feb., the 20th to be exact, I was eastward bound. First stop Toronto! Dipped my toe in Cabbage town’s chilly streets and then scooted off to Barbados with the gang.

The 3 of us, Tangerine Penguin, Tall Turquoise and Pinky la Pink Top were on a 7 day adventure around paradise. Here are a few shares via photos for you:

Safe to say it looks like a good time had by all?

Yes just what the doctor ordered!! …and even though the return to not so sunny Vancouver was tough this arrival today made it just a little bit easier.

The art doors have arrived!! The print blocks from the Big Print Project where made into doors and now, fingers crossed, this week will be installed!!

PROGRESS...from art to surviving in the best w

Last week we saw the beginnings of art going up — mind you the art in the Gallery space is there and posted, listed and being viewed. This week I got chairs!!! Yeah!! I’ve been waiting for these, a desk and coffee table to arrive for a while and honestly I cant speak for the desk and table at this point BUT I can share the great chairs. This completes my intimate eating area by the deck.

Everyday since I’ve actually moved in I notice moments and details in my beloved home. Today I’m going to share the new exciting chairs with you — 3 simple chairs that work and make the area a joy!

There will be more to come on so many levels. What I do want to share with you now is the Gallery space that I love with more than 40 pieces of art I love, some local, but all worth seeing. Here’s how it can happen just look at this link. I was turned onto the most amazing person who agreed to co-host an air bnb here at one of my places. This space was intended for MOM, but what was I thinking?

I put in all the extras for Mom to enjoy my gallery space, but somehow forgot she was not comfortable with being ground level. Silly me for being practical and thinking “no stairs” was a good thing, lol. Right? Yes, we all have out family enlightenment moments. To my surprise and JOY Mom decided she wanted to live in the back/new construction … Octopus. God love her, as it has brought me so much joy to know she is happy, happy happy in this space and community. She has told me how it reminds her of the “old country” and knowing all the people around you. God love her.

However, this meant my plan for her comfort went array and now what to do with the gallery? Thankfully because I have some amazing friends I was lead to the idea of air bnb “ing” the space. We went live last week when I went to an art opening on the Sunshine Coast and was full of nerves as I went there. OMG I should be meeting the people coming and be the “good Balkan host” I’ve been trained to be. (smile) It was all scheduled so I went with the flow. Well how delightful was that. I was able to share my loved home with others and not really have to do much. It was a chance for art (part of my collection) to be seen and enjoyed with people that, as it turned out, appreciated being surrounded by it.

Thank you Universe, your’e making me happy!… and speaking of happy

p.s. Happy Family Day!

ART... finally getting things hung

Last week there was a mention of giving up some “dirt”, well there’s something even better than that going on…

I’d like to say ‘"THE ART IS ON THE WALLS”!!! , but I can’t, not yet anyway. Another promise of art and dirt to come fingers crossed we’ll have some progress in that department in the very near future. However, here is the even better part I mentioned an amazing art opening recently attended that entertains in dirt and absurdity through surreal talent of an exceptional nature.

This past weekend a group of us went up the Sunshine Coast to spend time with friends and go SEE Maurice Spira’s retrospective curated by Canada Council at the Sechelt Gallery. Many years ago my dear friends Richard Tetrault and Esther Rausenberg introduced me to Maurice and his work and I had the good fortune to visit his studio/home in Roberts Creek on a few occasions. His place is an amazing visual delight at every turn with lots of tongue in cheek clever references to the absurdity of life with a twist of the dark side — just how I like it!

The retrospective attended by 9 of us, sporting eyeball tattoos on our foreheads and stylish knit caps, made for a fun homage to surrealism and Maurice at his exhibition . The curation was well done balancing Maurice’s portrait work, still lives and wonderful surreal anarchist pieces. The delightfully absurd and provocative work shined through the exquisitely talented technical execution of the artist’s hand. It’s worth taking a trip up the coast just to see this show. Here’s a sneak peak for you and don’t forget to get your eyeball tattoo for your forehead; a requirement for fun close looking!

The “eyes” have it for this exhibition:

Keep looking for the EYES!! …
